Anvil is a design and manufacturing platform for mechanical engineers. Our aim is to carry a part through its whole life — from requirements, to design, to a finished machined part — so an engineer can go from "I need this component" to holding it, without handing the work off to a shop, waiting days for a quote, and hoping a CAM programmer read their intent correctly.
Vertical integration is the strategy. We own and operate our own standardized CNC machining cells and build the software that drives them, so we control the full path from model to part rather than licensing tools to shops we don't run. Standardizing the setup — a single machine platform (DN Solutions DVF 5000), a defined tool library, and a primary material (6061-T651 aluminum) — makes the automation problem tractable, and every part we run feeds data back into the system: better feature recognition, better toolpath strategies, better cycle times. That feedback loop doesn't exist if the software has to work across heterogeneous shops.
We start with CAM — the step that turns a 3D model into machine instructions (toolpaths and G-code) — because it's the keystone. Today CAM is the bottleneck in precision machining: it's slow, it demands deep process expertise, and it doesn't scale with headcount, so machines sit idle waiting for programs. Automating it is what unlocks the rest of the pipeline in both directions:
- Downstream — automated programming keeps the cells fed and turns a design into a finished part quickly, instead of gating throughput on a scarce expert.
- Upstream — once the software actually understands how a part will be manufactured, it can push that knowledge back into design: flagging features that are hard, slow, or expensive to machine before they're locked in.
CAM is the hardest, highest-leverage piece. Solve it, and the full requirements-to-part path opens up around it.
